Advice & Who Uses What Service

Waste Advice

Recycle where possible – Where practical, keep recyclable waste types separate. This can significantly reduce the cost of removing your rubbish. Larger volumes gathered together on site can be removed as a much cheaper waste type. Chat to us when booking.

Loading times (when using a truck) – By stacking your rubbish items in an easy to access area speeds up the loading. Labour to load the truck is inclusive in the price but it has a limit as some sites can have difficult access that may require us to be on site for long er periods. A full load in a 6m3 truck has 1 hour of loading time built into the cost. There is usually never any extra labour cost if we can back up to the load. Please discuss any difficult access sites or sites where extra labour may be required at the time of booking.

Asbestos – There are strict rules governing the disposal of Asbestos Containing Material (ACM). Never put ACM in with other waste types. It will contaminate the load & it will be extremely expensive to decontaminate or dispose of once contaminated. Refer to our Asbestos page or FAQ’s for further information.

Preparing asbestos for disposal – To be accepted at the tip, all ACM must be wetted prior to being double wrapped or bagged in 200μm (200 micron) thick plastic & sealed. This is to ensure that no asbestos fibres can become airborne.

Mattresses – As mattresses are very difficult to recycle, they attract a large surcharge per mattress at the tipping facility. This can become expensive if you have multiple mattresses or ensembles as each ensemble is considered a mattress. There are a number of ways to save on removal costs;

  • Sell or give it away on the web (eBay, Gumtree etc).
  • Some councils may pick up for free
  • Dismantle or shred it yourself

Paint – Where possible, contact your local council as they may have a scheme for collection. At tipping facilities, liquid paint attracts a charge based on the size of the tin. Some tips to assist you in disposing of paint: Here are some tips:

  • Check with your council for existing disposal schemes
  • Dry the paint prior to disposal
  • If none of the above apply, empty the paint into other paint tins to fill them up. This reduces the number of tins you can be charged for. If you have a 4 litre can of paint the tip will charge you for 4 litres even if there is only 1 litre in it!

Waste Types

A key factor in estimating the cost of your waste removal is to determine the waste type. The most cost effective way to minimise your rubbish removal costs is to recycle where possible. ATR classifies waste streams in the following ways:

Mixed waste types

When different materials are combined together they are identified as a ‘mixed waste’ load when taken for disposal.

Mixed waste Type 1Any combination of general mixed waste – timbers, plasterboard, plastic, household furniture, office materials etc. No heavy waste types
Mixed waste Type 2Same as above but contains a small amount of heavy waste (concrete, bricks, tiles, soils etc)
Mixed waste Type 3Same as above but contains a larger amount of heavy waste (concrete, bricks, tiles, soil etc)
Clean heavy wasteAny combination of bricks, concrete, tiles, render, sand, soil, fines & asphalt only

Recyclable waste types

Recyclables attract a lower disposal fee so if you have a reasonable volume of any of the recyclables listed, keep them separated from other waste types. This will keep your waste removal costs lower.

ConcreteClean concrete of any size with or without steel, mesh, reinforcement – nothing else
BricksClean bricks &/or render – nothing else

Roof tilesClean roof tiles – concrete or terracotta

Mixed masonryAny combination of bricks, concrete, tiles, render & sandstone
SoilsAny types of shale, dirt, sandstone but no rubbish, vegetation, or man-made products
MetalsAny combination of copper, lead, aluminium & steel
Vegetation, Cardboard & PaperAny type of organic vegetation (no logs). Excludes mulch or decomposed leaf litter. These are considered soils by the tipping facilities

Hazardous or Special waste types

Some waste types contain hazardous materials or are classified as ‘special waste’ types by the tipping facilities. Be sure to speak to one of our friendly consultants to discuss the best way to organise the removal of hazardous or special waste types

AsbestosWrapped & sealed in 200μm (micron) thick plastic or unwrapped (must be covered ready for us to wrap)
InsulationFibreglass, wool. Must be bagged & sealed for transportation (garbage bags are suitable)
TyresSubject to volumes. Usually 1 car tyre in a mixed load is acceptable at the tip
MattressesSurcharge per mattress.

CarpetAny carpet. Small volumes only. Large volumes attract a surcharge
Paint or liquid wasteLiquid waste is not accepted. ATR is not licensed to transport liquid waste. Dried paint is ok in any quantity.
ChemicalsChemical waste is not accepted. ATR is not licensed to transport liquid waste
